Minutes of April 28th, 2009 Meeting

POST MEETING opened by Commander Bill Thomas in Bldg #6 after the normal formalities. Charter was draped in honor of Comrade Martyn Albright. Martyn was Navy veteran who served as a pilot on the aircraft carrier Intrepid during World War II. His wife Norma stated they were most appreciative for his excellent care at the LB Veterans hospital and the special visit by our Chaplain R. Coronado. We also reviewed the tree planting at the LB VA Garden Center by Jim Bradford in honor of Dave Van Aken.

Commander Bill presented an award certificate to Jerry Lingren for his outstanding efforts during his offerings of Veteran Poppies and a VFW Shirt was awarded to Paul Lambach for his volunteer work at the VA Hospital. Bill also reviewed plans for the Memorial Day Ceremony on May 25th at 2:00 P.M. at the Seal Beach Pier. J. Crowley and J. Lingren will prepare an agenda and will present to Bill for final approval. All members should plan to attend in dress attire. Bill will keep us advised of plans for our next Flag Retirement Ceremony to be conducted at a local school in June.

QM Dan Schmaltz distributed a 3-31-09 computerized financial report showing an Opening Balance, Receipts, Disbursements and Closing Balance. QM Dan received approval to purchase VFW shirts for all members that meet post critera, i.e. meeting attendance, volunteer efforts, etc. Dan also stated the need for a fund raising meeting and will coordinate plans with our members.

Commander Bill asked all to present their Patriots Pen & Voice Of Democracy entries for 2009 as soon as possible. Entry forms are available on line or may be obtained from QM Dan. The discussion to share cost with the Legion for JFTB flags purchase at Gen Coombs retirement on July 4th was tabled until next meeting.

Rod Carpenter needs Newsletter information no later than the 5th of next month.

Jim Crowley distributed an information pamphlet on the Patient Carnival on May 3rd at the LB VA Community Center at 2:00 PM.

District 2 Convention and Awards Banquet will be held on May 16-17, 2009 at the Holiday Inn in Anaheim, CA.

Next regular meeting is Tues May 26, 2009 at the Naval Weapons Station. (6:00 PM Social, 7:00 PM Meeting) Refreshments to be furnished by the Auxiliary and Paul Lambach.
