Minutes of March 24th, 2009 Meeting

POST MEETING opened by Commander Bill Thomas in Bldg #6 after the normal formalities. New member Alvin Goldstein (recruited by Jim Mueller) was introduced and gave a brief history of his military service in World War II. Al joined the Navy as a young man soon after Pearl Harbor and participated in many of the Asian Island invasions.

Commander Bill reviewed our monthly newsletter and noted all articles should be sent to QM Dan by the 8th of each month. QM Dan will then forward the E-Mail version to Rod Carpenter by the 10th for his preparation of the mailed newsletter. We noted many of our E-Mail addresses need to be updated.

Quartermaster Dan Schmaltz distributed a 2-28-09 computerized financial report showing an Opening Balance, Receipts, Disbursements and Closing Balance. QM Dan dist Memoriam Poker Chips that were approved at last meeting in honor of Dave Van Aken. Dan also dist new phamplets that should be used selectively with the chips as recruitment tools. Members approved the purchase ($40) of special VFW shirts to be awarded to members who devote the most effort to assist veterans. Dan has ordered Poppies and members need to make plans for offering them prior to Memorial Day.

Commander Bill asked all to present their Patriots Pen & VOD entries for 2009 as soon as possible. Entry forms are available on line or may be obtained from QM Dan. Comm Bill also reviewed plans for upcoming events i.e. Memorial Day (May 25th) and Flag Day (June 14th) The Legion will be in charge of Memorial Day ceremonies this year and Comm Bill will contact schools to determine where the Flag Retirement will be held. It was noted that our post needs better public relations with the city and our Commander volunteered for this important function. More details at next meeting.

Jim Mueller advised all of the retirement of Gen Coombs and his July 4, 2009 ceremony at JFTB. The new Veterans Center and the Walk of Honor bricks at the JFTB were also discussed.

Dist 2 Convention and Awards Banquet will be held on May 16-17, 2009 at the Holiday Inn in Anaheim, CA.

Next regular meeting is Tues April 28, 2009 at the Naval Weapons Station. (6:00 PM Social, 7:00 PM Meeting) Refreshments to be furnished by the Auxiliary and Bill Thomas.
