:COMMANDERS NOTES:

SERVICE OFFICER, Dan Schmaltz
We are sorry to inform you all that our Commander, Bill Thomas will be missing in action for another month or so. Bill took a fall and broke his hip after attending a meeting on how the Post wanted to proceed with our Newsletters. He's in recovery now and is just starting to get around a little. Our Senior Vice Commander Jim Crowley will be assuming Bill's duties until he's ready to return.

Speaking of Newsletters, due to the lack of sponsorship ( we're down to six now-see active sponsor's below), we will be discontinuing the mailed our Newsletter. For the next few months the newsletter will eMailed to our members and sponsors. It is our plan to utilize our website to publish the Newsletter from this point on. We can no longer afford to spend $2,160 a year on the newsletter. We are looking at ways to reduce that cost, but until we do, you all will have to visit our website or get on our eMail list. If you want to receive the news letter by eMail, please send your eMail address to The Gunny at thegunny@ddsf-ent.com.

SENIOR VICE COMMANDER, Jim Crowley

Our second session to tie up all the loose ends is scheduled to be this coming Thursday (9 Oct) at 1400 (2PM) at Walt's Place.

Troop & Family Support: Jim Crowley and Jerry Lingren are meeting with the 5th Battalion, 14th Marines Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Morrisroe, his Sergeant Major, the assistant I&I Major Torres and the Battery Commander for Deploying Battery, Captain King to identify any needs their troops and/or their families that the Post might be able to assist with during their deployment.

JUNIOR VICE COMMANDER, David Van Aken
A Veterans Day Ceremony committee met at Walter Nisbet's home on Friday Oct 3rd. to line up the coming Vets Day event. Various tasks were assigned to different individuals to make contacts with participants. Jim Crowley has accepted the M. C. duties. More details will be available at our Oct 28th meeting. An area in which we need additional support would be under "Publicity" . This would be a notice to appear in local newspapers to attract more attendance at this event..

Buddy Poppies were distributed at our Sept. post meeting. We still have another 500 poppies available for members to pick up. These will be these on hand, again, at our Oct 28th meeting. Members are encouraged to step forward and join us in this worth while program . Additional poppies, for those who have received a supply, will be available upon request. We suggest the distribution to the public start about a week prior to November 11th. Revenue to be submitted to Post Quartermaster, Dan Schmaltz.

QUARTERMASTER, Dan Schmaltz

Hello, Support Our Troops Team. With the holidays fast approaching, we would like to remember our deployed military by sending:

  • Caring cards and letters
    • Please do not enclose them in envelopes -- this saves us in shipping costs
    • Please focus on the positive to encourage and build up our Troops
    • Please do not discuss position on the conflict, and NO reference to death, dying, killing, etc. These notes cannot be sent to our Troops
  • Thanksgiving/Christmas decorations (non-breakable for shipping)
  • Holiday candy (manufacturer sealed)
  • AA batteries
  • Handcrafted items (knitted/sewn/crocheted), such as warm caps and scarves, and small lap blankets
    • Caps and scarves should be in neutral colors (gray, brown, blue, black)
    • Blankets may be in colorful and cheerful colors or patterns
  • Relaxation gifts (such as puzzle books, games, toys)
And, of course, your donations help us send phone cards so our Troops can call home. (We only purchase and send AT&T global calling cards)

We are always in need of snacks, toiletries, and tax deductible monetary donations (designated to "Troops" in the memo line) anytime of the year.

If you are interested or have other ideas, please contact me anytime.

The latest date to receive Veterans Day and Thanksgiving care items is October 22. Christmas and New Year care items are needed by November 19 at the latest. Any items that we receive after our Christmas and New Year shipment is on its way will be sent to our Troops in early January.

Thank you for your continued kindness and generosity to our homesick Troops!

Best regards, Laurie -- Until they all come home, thank you for supporting our Heroes!!

President's Comments/Tidbits - by Mary Crawford

Greetings! September was a busy month. We had good attendance at the meeting. It was great to see you back from "whatever" you were doing and from "wherever" you had been. If we didn't see your smiling face, you were missed by all. We hope you are well. Refreshments were great, and lots of them.

We had good discussions and a report of our plan for the veteran's holidays. Plans seem to be on schedule. Our post comrades are taking part in our plans. More later.

Alma Ferris presented an idea for a future project, which sounded good. We'll be discussing it later.

Now future action! November is upon us! And so is election. Don't forget to vote! Remember the A.B.C.'s
A. Analyze, then act
B. Be informed, then be yourself
C. Cast your vote - it's yours alone.

I Am Old Glory: For more than nine score years I have been the banner of hope and freedom for generation after generation of Americans. Born amid the first flames of America’s fight for freedom, I am the symbol of a country that has grown from a little group of thirteen colonies to a united nation of fifty sovereign states. Planted firmly on the high pinnacle of American Faith my gently fluttering folds have proved an inspiration to untold millions. Men have followed me into battle with unwavering courage.

They have looked upon me as a symbol of national unity. They have prayed that they and their fellow citizens might continue to enjoy the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, which have been granted to every American as the heritage of free men. So long as men love liberty more than life itself; so long as they treasure the priceless privileges bought with the blood of our forefathers; so long as the principles of truth. justice and charity for all remain deeply rooted in human hearts, I shall continue to be the enduring banner of the United States of America.
